The unemployment rate in Prince George saw a slight drop in April according to numbers released by StatsCanada today (May 10).

In March, the city saw a 5.9 per cent unemployment rate.

Last month, it dropped by only 0.2 to 5.7.

British Columbia still remains the leading province for the unemployment rate in April, sitting at 4.6 per cent.

Canada, meanwhile, saw a 0.1 per cent drop in the unemployment rate last month, also down to 5.7.

Employment rose by 107,000 jobs nationally in April, with large gains in part-time work for youth.

Gains came in multiple industries in the country including wholesale and retail trade, construction, other services, public administration, and agriculture.

Employment saw a decrease in professional, scientific, and technical services.

Private and public sectors saw numbers go up while there was no change in self-employment.

StatsCanada says youth aged 15 to 24 saw employment rise by 47,000 jobs in April, which was sparked by a strong increase in part-time work (66,000) and left the youth unemployment rate at 10.3 per cent.

That's the lowest rate since comparable data was made available in 1976.

Construction also saw an increase in April by 29,000 jobs which were led by Ontario and British Columbia.
