Prince George schools sweep senior basketball regionals to qualify for 2020 provincials

Eight teams to be in contention, PGSS Jr. Boys ending B.C. tournament soon

When it comes to dribbling the rock and smashing the boards, Prince George high schools stand above the rest of the region.

The 2020 edition of B.C. championships are starting later this week for junior and senior girls’ basketball, which includes four School District 57 (SD57) teams hoping to add to their 2019-20 trophy cases, while four senior boys’ squads will kickstart their provincial runs during the beginning of March.

Each championship comes two weeks after the North Central Zones took place, which saw Prince George schools come out on top.

In AAA senior girls, the 18-time city-champion Duchess Park Condors prevailed over College Heights to earn their spot in provincials with a ninth-place ranking.

They’ll face G.W. Graham (Chilliwack) tomorrow morning (Feb. 26) in Langley.

Meanwhile, the AAAA North Central zone-champion Prince George Secondary, who lost to Duchess Park in the 2020 city finals, will start as the 16th-ranked team in their respective provincials.

The Polars will tip-off against the top-seeded Semiahmoo Totems (Surrey) also tomorrow morning from Langley.

The junior girls North Central champions are the College Heights Cougars after beating Duchess Park in the finals.

CHSS will start 15th in the 24-team tournament, while DPSS is ranked 23rd; both schools start their provincials at Noon tomorrow.

On the boys’ side, SD57 schools won all North Central Zone regional titles to secure their spots in the B.C. championships, all of which are taking place March 4 to 7 in Langley as well.

The PGSS Polars are the AAAA winners by the skin of their teeth, beating North Peace (Fort St. John) by a score of 89-86 on home court.

Duchess Park, fresh off their fifth consecutive city title, triumphed over College Heights 103-55 to win the AAA regional banner.

The D.P. Todd Trojans, runners up to the Condors in the 2020 city finals, found their way back on top of the AA North Central Zone by reaching triple-digits in a 100-74 win over Kelly Road Secondary.

Cedars Christian showed their dominance in single-A play, crushing McBride 72-59 in the zone championships in Valemount to book their ticket to provincials next month.

The 2020 B.C. Junior Boys Basketball Championship is wrapping up today (Feb. 25) in Langley and features Prince George Secondary.

The Polars were ranked 28th to begin the tournament, but they could finish as high as 23rd if they’re able to beat the Dover Bay Dolphins (Nanaimo) this afternoon.

PGSS has a record of 1-3, winning their first consolation game over Charles Hays (Prince Rupert) by a 75-44 score on Saturday (Feb. 22).
