Just because you're cold, doesn't mean others will stay away

When the weather is as cold as it is in Prince George right now, most people think to stay inside and think others do the same.

However, Prince George RCMP is warning residents it can be the opposite.

Cpl. Craig Douglass says when it's cold outside, thieves are also cold and this time of year, Mounties get a spike in auto theft reports in the city.

"More than likely, the thief was not specifically looking for a car to steal, the opportunity just presented itself," he says.

You could think leaving your car outside idling to warm up, with the keys in the ignition is safe to do, but thieves are most likely to get into your car and drive off with it.

"The Prince George RCMP are asking all vehicle owners to ensure they are not a victim of auto theft," Douglass adds.

"Install a remote car starter or stay with your vehicle as it warms up. Being cold for a few minutes may save your vehicle from being stolen by an opportunistic thief."

Three cars were reported stolen yesterday (Jan. 13) alone and police expect more to happen while the cold spell continues throughout the week.

Police are also reminding vehicle owners that it is actually a violation under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act to leave an insecure car running while unattended.

If your vehicle is stolen in such a scenario, your insurance can be deemed void and the insurer might not cover the losses associated with the theft.
