Prince George RCMP do not suspect foul play after a body was found Friday afternoon by a campsite at the base of a residential area close to the downtown core off First Avenue near Carney Street.

Prince George RCMP are investigating a suspicious death after a decomposed body was found in a tent Friday afternoon at a campsite in a wooded area near the downtown core.

Police were called to the scene at about 2 p.m. on Friday after receiving a report of a body found in the 2000 block of First Avenue in a secluded area below a residential neighbourhood close to Carney Street.

“The body was found in an advanced stage of decomposition, having been exposed to the elements for a number of days," said Prince George RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Jennifer Cooper.

"Due to these circumstances, the Serious Crime Unit has taken conduct of the investigation while we wait for the findings of the B.C. Coroner Service, which is conducting a parallel investigation, The death is being treated as suspicious while police officers collect more information; however, police do not believe there is any increased risk to public safety. The investigation remains ongoing".

A large area surrounding the campsite was cordoned off while police conducted their investigation. A witness working at an adjacent rental store said several police vehicles left the scene in a hurry with emergency lights and sirens on after officers driving those vehicles had been at the campsite.

No details were released on what caused the sudden death.

Prince George has had four homicides this year, all drug related.

On Friday the Citizen posted incorrect information on the homicide count for the city.
