Prince George needs to give more

There is good news and bad news when it comes to Canadian Blood Services', Interior Drive for Life Challenge.

There is good news and bad news when it comes to Canadian Blood Services', Interior Drive for Life Challenge.

With four weeks left in the challenge, Prince George has surpassed its goals when it comes to getting new donors to donate, but the friendly competition between Prince George and Kelowna is ramping up, and Kelowna is in the lead.

"We have four weeks left, I'm not worried," said Tamara Sweet, partnership specialist, Canadian Blood Services.

"Kelowna has a bigger [donation] target than we do [because of their higher population] and are expected to collect more blood than [Prince George]."

The week two results show that 136 collections were made in Prince George and 176 collections were made in Kelowna.

"Last week we did way better than Kelowna for attracting new donors. We collected 115 per cent of our target and they collected 110 per cent of their target. That brought up our percentage to 94 per cent overall and 109 per cent for Kelowna," said Sweet.

"If we have another fantastic week this week, like we did last week we can definitely come closer to catching up to them," she said.

Week three's target is 177 units for the week. That translates into needing to attract 177 people have to donate the average 1 unit this week.

This week the clinic is open Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The clinic would prefer they make an appointment so they can be prepared with enough staff, however appointments aren't necessary.

Donating blood takes an hour an average.
