Prince George based musicians are competing in the Canadian Songwriting Challenge – and they’re the only ones from the northern B.C. to do so.

Local musicians Naomi Kavka, Justing Gendreau and Dan Beasy have written the song “Say I’m Fine” which has made the top 15 for the Canadian Songwriter Challenge 2020.

The challenge is for emerging B.C. artists and songwriters and is, of course, taking place in an online format this year.

Songwriting teams from across B.C. wrote and recorded a demo that speaks to the songwriting theme of “Alone Together”. With a little back and forth, Kavka and Beasy, took on the theme to write the country-esque duet called “Say I’m Fine” which reflects two people singing but apart.

This year the 15 participating teams have the chance to share their songs with the public and let fans and music lovers alike hear what they’ve been working on during the challenge and select their five favourite submissions.

Voters can vote up to five times through the voting period, which is from May 18 to Friday, May 22. The voting component contributes to the overall score of the contestants. Music BC and the Canadian Songwriter Challenge Mentors and Industry Jury, however, will select the five finalists based on the merits of the song.

The jury will score the songs based on lyrics, originality, musicality and how well it speaks to the theme of "Alone Together".

The top five songs will be announced on June 1 with each team receiving $1,000 CAD to record, mix, and master their song at an eligible BC studio of their choice.
