Mounties in Prince George are issuing a reminder to motorists after numerous accidents amid winter conditions.

Prince George RCMP spokesperson Cst. Jennifer Cooper says on Sunday (Jan. 31), police tended to a single-vehicle crash on Ospika Boulevard near Davis Road where a motorist lost control of their vehicle when it hit ice and collided with a lamp standard.

The driver walked away injury-free from the accident, Cooper adds.

Less than a week earlier, police also responded to a two-vehicle crash near the same location, which shut down Ospika Boulevard for numerous hours, resulting in one of the drivers needing to be airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital.

"The Prince George RCMP would like to remind motorists that winter driving could lead to rapidly changing road conditions," Cooper said in a statement his afternoon (Feb. 2).

"Leaving early, slowing down and driving to the road and weather conditions are key to arriving to your destination safely."

Police say having proper winter tires, clearing all windows of snow and turning on headlights can help decrease chances of a crash happening.

Authorities also suggest having an emergency kit in your vehicle during the winter including a first aid kit, battery jumper cables, a shovel and a traction map could be beneficial.

Head of the Prince George RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit Sgt. Kyle Ushock is asking all drivers to obey road closures in case of an accident.

"During several recent road closures motorists have driven around marked police cars and flaggers blocking the roads.

"This puts the lives of emergency crews at risk and complicates an already chaotic scene.”
