Prince George residents who live close to the regional district landfill at 6595 Foothills Blvd., might have noticed a putrid smell after the dumpsite caught fire Friday evening.
Thirteen Prince George Fire Rescue firefighters from three halls were called to the scene at about 6:30 p.m. Friday when fire broke out on the active face of the dump covering an area of about 100 square metres.
Crews attacked the flames with handheld hoses and contracted heavy equipment operators used on-scene equipment to cover the area with thick piles of dirt to extinguish the flames.
Damage is estimated at $20,000.
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, which operates the dump, lost one of the two mats it uses to cover the active face each night. The mat is a series of industrial belts bolted together.
The cause is still undetermined and there were no injuries to any fire personnel.
