Prince George Labour Day celebrations will once again look different this year.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the city’s Labour Day organizing committee, which includes local unions and community groups, will not be hosting the traditional march and celebration on Sept. 6.
Instead, in keeping with the theme of labour fighting for the rights of everyone in our community, the Labour Day organizing committee has collected financial contributions from a number of unions and community groups.
They will be donating these funds to a variety of local organizations which provide food, beverages and other supports to those in the community who are experiencing homelessness or other challenges meeting their needs and those of their children.
“What better way to uphold our tradition of Labour Day and our ongoing support for the community than to make food and other supports available to those who are in need. We are happy to see the excellent support from unions and community groups in Prince George for this event,” said Labour Day Organization Committee Coordinator, Matt Baker.
In previous years the Labour Day Celebration has included a march advocating for the rights of everyone in Prince George to a good quality of life.
Following the march, there have traditionally been information booths from unions and local organizations that provide lots of food and entertainment for upwards of 2000 people attending throughout the day.
The organizing committee said, similar to last year’s celebration which was also altered, they felt strongly that it was important to hold a Labour Day event in 2021 even though pandemic challenges necessitate it has to be different from the traditional one.
