The Prince George Humane Society has an uncertain future.

The society is facing closure within the next two months and is currently fundraising to keep its doors open for longer. Board member Marina Crick says the rising costs of caring for animals and drop in donations has left the society struggling financially.

Crick says it costs roughly $300,000 a year to run the Prince George Humane Society, and that can vary depending on the number of animals the shelter takes in and what medical needs those animals have.

She adds the organization cares for anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 animals a year while running a variety of animal education programing.

To keep its doors open, the society has launched a campaign called “Change 4 Change.”

Crick says they will be asking around 500 partners throughout the community to collect change with the donation cans.

“This donation can bring in $30,000 to $100,000, depending on how generous people are,” says Crick, adding that the society is looking for at least $30,000, which will allow it to keep its doors open beyond the two-month mark.

Board member Kirby MacInnis says the society is also currently restructuring and has removed the executive director position. She says the salary from that position is being used to retain other staff.

“Everyone is doing the best that they could. With the board members that came in, they each came in with a new skill set, and that is where I think we were able to identify the need for restructuring,” says MacInnis. “I hope the community can be patient with us for a few weeks while we figure this out.”

The Change 4 Change campaign will take place starting today (Aug. 26) and run for the next two weeks. You can make a donation at the Prince George Humane Society’s location near First Avenue (Unit 11- 1839 Industrial Cariboo Estates) and also keep a lookout for a Change 4 Change tin in the community.

“At this point in time, we are just going to try and do our best to keep our doors open and help as many animals as possible,” says Crick.

You can also make a donation online.
