A Prince George home caught fire yesterday morning (Jan. 15).

John Law, assistant Chief of the Prince George Fire Department, says crews from four fire halls responded to a structure fire in the 4000-block Zimmaro Avenue.

When crews arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the single-story house.

Law says firefighters started a fast offensive attack but due to the extremely cold weather, it stopped their gear and equipment from getting inside and they couldn't gain entry.

Crews started an exterior defensive attack that successfully knocked the fire down.

A lone tenant was home at the time of the blaze and managed to safely exit and call 911. They did receive medical attention as a precaution.

Several officers received minor injuries due to slips and falls.

Damages are estimated to be $300,000.

The fire was a result of work being performed on a snowblower; it has been labelled an accident.
