Prince George high schools sent 16 Track and Field athletes to B.C. Championships

Four Top-10 finishes, including two from Duchess Park’s Max Schonewille

No medals were won this year by Prince George track and field athletes from local high schools, but certainly made a statement in certain competitions.

In total, 16 athletes from five different secondary schools were given the chance to run, jump, throw, sprint, and chase the best of the best in athletics this past weekend at the 2019 B.C. Championships in Kelowna.

Duchess Park were one of two schools to send six students to the meet, including Max Schonewille, who had two of Prince George’s four top-10 finishes.

The high-school senior claimed fifth place in the men’s 6kg hammer throw (41.75 metres), which was the highest finish of any northern capital athlete, and sixth place in the men’s 1.75kg discus throw, tossing the disc 36.57 metres.

Schonewille also made the finals of the senior men’s 800g javelin throw, finishing in 14th with a 42.85-metre spear.

The other two top-10s came from Kelly Road’s Tyler Loth and Stephanie Arronge of Prince George Secondary (PGSS).

Loth is now B.C.’s sixth fastest junior runner after crossing the finish line in 11.55 seconds, 0.47 seconds behind first, in the finals of the men’s 100m dash.
