High school students in Prince George and across northern B.C. are being sought for a program set to offer a combined $4.2 million for university and college education.

The Beedie Luminaries Scholarship is set to award 105 grade 12 students up to $40,000 each for post-secondary purposes, inadditon to mentors, student coaches, peer support groups and paid internships.

The $50-million organization, found by Ryan Beedie in 2018, will select students who are facing financial adversity and the money can be used toward any type of post-secondary study, including public university, college, or trade schools in B.C.

Brooke Ashdown was one of three lucky northern B.C. recipients last year, graduating from Fort St. John's North Peace Secondary.

“This scholarship does a lot more than help you financially,” she said in a news release sent to PrinceGeorgeMatters.

“It also gives you a community of mentors and fellow students who are there to support you, which is so important when you are entering your first year of university – especially in a year as chaotic as this one.”

Beedie Luminaries appreciates when students not only display academic readiness, but also shares their personal stories of adversity and resilience.

The organization adds that among 2020's recipients, over 70 per cent live in rental or social housing, 48 per cent come from single-parent or foster families, and 26 per cent are the first in their family to attend post-secondary.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 13, 2021 at 9 a.m. Pacific time, and winners will be selected in early May.

Students looking to apply for the scholarship can do so by visiting the Beedie Luminaries website
