A second first happened this past weekend for a Prince George golfer.
Tyler Robertson and his Camosun College Chargers men’s golf team claimed the 2019 PACWEST Championship in Vancouver, his first conference gold medal and the school’s eighth since 1996.
In the individual contest, the 22-year-old finished in solo eighth place among almost 20 athletes competing at University Golf Club, hosted by the Douglas College Royals.
On the par-72 course, he posted rounds of 74 (+2) and back-to-back 80s (+8) at the three-day tournament for a total score of 234 (+18), seven strokes off first place and five off the podium.
The Chargers, as a team, accumulated a three-round score of 930 to win the conference title by a nine-stroke margin over Vancouver Island University.
Team totals are tallied by adding up the best four scores and Camosun used Robertson’s rounds each day.
His team now moves on to the CCAA National Championships at Club de Golf Continental in Quebec.
Roberston, who’s the lone fifth-year veteran on his team, told PrinceGeorgeMatters in an earlier interview he’s confident in his abilities and his team’s determination on the course.
“Overall, our team is very good ball-strikers,” he said. “From the number-one player to the number-seven player, we all have very good trails towards the green from the fairway or off the tee. We never put ourselves in too much trouble and I think that’s what really separates us from other schools.”
Last week, Robertson won Camosun’s host golf event at Highlands Pacific by three strokes for his first individual collegiate golf win in his five-year tenure with the Victoria-based school.
This will be his second time he gets to compete on the big stage after finishing 41st overall in 2018, with Camosun missing out on the podium entirely.
Nationals begin in two weeks from Oct. 15 to 18.
