Prince George courthouse painted by advocacy group demanding action on opioid crisis

The group is recognizing the National Day of Action on the overdose crisis

It's a sobering issue across the province right now: the opioid drug overdose epidemic and one Prince George advocacy group is making their message heard.

A member of the Pounds Project says they are responsible for the red hand prints that were seen at the Prince George courthouse earlier today (April 16) in solitude with recognizing the National Day of Action on the overdose risis.

Pictures posted by the group on social media and photos taken at the courthouse represent the groups' solutions they want to be recognized when it comes to drug criminalization:

  • Safe Supply
  • Decriminalize all drugs
  • Overdose Preventions Sites in all communities
  • The federal government to step up - declaring a National Emergency
  • Staying Alive Plans for everyone. No one uses alone and has a plan regardless of drug history or lack of - this helps UNdo stigma and normalize drug use

The painting began last night at the courthouse (April 15) by with what the member says is washable paint.

City crews were seen washing the paint off earlier this afternoon (April 16).

Nearby, there are also posters taped to maps with messages about requesting decriminalization of all drugs.

The Pounds Project is hosting a peaceful gathering tonight once again outside the courthouse at 7 p.m.
