First, it was the 2019 B.C. Minor Baseball 15U AA Championships, and now, it’s the entire city.

Prince George is closing all of its ball diamonds and sports fields thanks to a large downpour of rain the region received overnight and continuing into today (Aug. 2) causing poor field conditions.

This is the second time in under a month the weather has forced the temporary closure.

The city states this decision is necessary to prevent any possible injuries or root damage to the turf.

The Prince George Bantam Knights were scheduled to play at 9 a.m. this morning in continuation of their quest for a league title on home soil, but was called off by the tournament committee, as well as all eight games that were scheduled to take place at Nechako Park today.

The day and times in which the games will be made up are still being determined.

For now, the city says parks and fields are scheduled to reopen tomorrow morning (Aug. 3), but crews will be monitoring if that needs to be extended or shortened.

Environment Canada is calling for as much as 20 mm of rain today, followed by a risk of a thunderstorm and winds gusting up to 50 km/h later this evening.
