Buses in Prince George will be free after 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve, and service will be extended to 3 a.m. on many routes.

BC Transit and the City of Prince George are partnering to offer free bus rides on New Year’s Eve, starting at 7 p.m.

In addition, bus service on routes 1, 5, 10, 15, 16, 46, 88, 89 and 91 will be extended to 3 a.m. to give party-goers a safe option to get home. To plan your route ahead of time, go online to BC Transit’s website.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, MADD Canada is encouraging all Canadians to plan a safe and sober ride home on New Year’s Eve.

“If you get behind the wheel impaired, you are risking your licence, your freedom and, most importantly, your life and the lives of others,” MADD Canada national president Jaymie-Lyne Hancock said in a statement released on Wednesday. “This can all be avoided by spending a few minutes to plan your sober ride home.”

Never drive if you are impaired by alcohol, cannabis or other drugs, don’t get into a vehicle being driven by somebody who is impaired and call 911 to report any suspected impaired drivers, MADD Canada says.

Prince George party-goers can take the bus, have an Operation Red Nose volunteer drive you home, take a taxi by contacting Prince George Taxi or Emerald Taxi, use the Uride ride-sharing service, arrange a sober designated driver or plan to stay the night.

Party hosts should be sure to offer food and non-alcoholic beverages to guests, make sure your guests have a plan for a safe ride home, cut off guests who are already intoxicated, have the phone number for taxis and Operation Red Nose handy and be prepared to have guests stay overnight if needed, MADD Canada says.
