Provincial fire crews are gearing up for a controlled burn today (Oct. 24), some 75 kilometres east of Prince George.
Weather permitting, B.C. Timber Sales and the B.C. Wildfire Service will conduct a 50-hectare burn about seven kilometres north of the Fraser River. The burn site is near the six-kilometre mark on the McGregor Forest Service Road.
Smoke is expected to be visible from Highway 16.
The goals of the prescribed burn include preparing the site for tree planting and reducing accumulations of dead and combustible material to decrease the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the area, according to a press release.
This burn will only proceed if site, weather and venting conditions are suitable and allow for a low to moderate intensity fire.
