Police dismantled a large marijuana plantation near Prince George this week.

On Wednesday, Prince George and North District RCMP teams arrived together at a property on Koroa Road and their search warrant triggered a major discovery.

"Members located a sophisticated marijuana grow operation and seized approximately 1,970 plants at various stages of growth, along with property and equipment used for the cultivation of marijuana," said North District RCMP spokeswoman Const. Lesley Smith. "RCMP arrested one adult male who is facing charges for the production of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The suspect's first court appearance has been

scheduled for Apr. 25.

"Marijuana grow-ops are designed to produce large quantities of marijuana using dangerous and extreme growing conditions," said Smith. "The impact of this practice includes increased criminal activity in residential areas, decreased real estate values, fire hazards, health risks and environmental dangers."

This seizure represents the largest in the Prince George area at least since the end of 2010 (the second biggest was 1,700 plants seized in May of last year on Courval Road).
