A portable garage similar to this one was stolen from the Child Development Centre late last week.

The Prince George Child Development Centre is asking for the public's help in recovering a portable garage stolen from its property late last week.

The item is described as a white, heavy-duty tent, about 10-by-20 feet, with large metal poles. Its walls were off at the time it went missing.

"It was just used as cover to provide shade for the kids," said CDC executive director Darrell Roze.

A latch off one of the centre's gates also went missing, a hole was cut in the CDC's chain link fence and a security camera was smashed. The theft occurred shortly after midnight Friday.

Roze said the portable garage had been up on the CDC's home at Strathcona and Tamarack for a couple of years.

"It was donated to us and the thing's old, probably 15 years old. It probably wouldn't be worth anything," Roze said. "But they did hundreds of dollars of damage to get to it."

It was only the second time in the last six years the CDC has been targeted by thieves. A piece of playground equipment was stolen in the previous incident, also after a hole was cut in the fence.

The CDC would like to get the portable garage back.

"It's really irritating when you have people that are willing to come in and damage things like this and for just such a minor gain," said Roze.

Anyone with information on the stolen bike is asked to call Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300, or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be provided online at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca, or by texting CRIMES using keyword “pgtips.”
