Prince George RCMP are reminding drivers to keep their eyes out for school zones following a close call on the Old Cariboo Highway.

On Friday morning, police pulled over an unloaded tractor trailer traveling at about 100 km/h at Pineview elementary school just outside city limits.

The truck was going so fast. police said, that the driver had to lock the wheels and skid for about 30 metres before stopping. The incident occurred at about 9 a.m. and children were in the area only a short time before, police said.

"It is a concern that some drivers are not getting the message. In this incident, a professional driver either failed to recognize the school zone or chose to ignore it," said Sgt. Al Steinhauser, head of the Prince George RCMP's municipal traffic section. "Either way, it's unacceptable."

The driver was issued tickets for speeding in a school zone and failing to wear a seatbelt under the Motor Vehicle Act.

The tickets added up to $350 in fines.
