The annual Cops For Cancer-Tour de North will push its first pedal today, setting off from Fort St. John on its way to Williams Lake. The group of riders is scheduled to arrive in Prince George to stop overnight on Tuesday.

"The ride, made up in part by six riders from Prince George, will arrive in Bear Lake for a planned lunch at the BC Ambulance Station at noon," said Prince George RCMP spokeswoman Const. Lesley Smith. "Following that, the group will head to Prince George" with an estimated time of arrival of about 5 p.m.

They will wheel into town via the Hart Highway, turn onto 5th Avenue in order to pass in front of RCMP North District Headquarters and on to Foothills Boulevard. The riders then turn south until 15th Avenue where they have an appearance scheduled at the soccer fields, followed by another at CNC.

A welcome event at CNC will be the best opportunity for the public to meet the riders. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and organizers hope for a large cheer to celebrate the tour's arrival at about 5:30 p.m.

Following the welcome event, a reception and dinner will be held at the Sandman Signature Ballroom between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m.

It won't be a late night for the riders. The tour athletes - all of them connected to the RCMP - have to be back on their bikes on Wednesday morning. A breakfast is scheduled for the group at Denny's Restaurant at 7 a.m., followed by a brief visit with students and staff at Sacred Heart elementary school at 8:30 a.m.

"Riders will then depart Prince George at 9:15 a.m. and head for it's first ever trip to Hixon and a planned lunch at Hixon school at noon," said Smith. "Following this event, the ride will head further south to Quesnel and eventually on to Williams Lake where the week-long event will conclude."
