Thieves have made off with two big rigs in the last two days. Police said it was fortunate for the owners that both were recovered in good order.
The first to roll away in the hands of the crooks was a tractor without a trailer on Sunday morning sometime between midnight and 11 o'clock. The 2001 Freightliner had been in the 1900 block of 1st Ave.
"The truck was recovered in the area of Shelley Road South and Highway 16," said RCMP spokeswoman Const. Julie Champagne. "The truck appeared to have been key-driven although all keys are accounted for. Stolen from the inside of the truck was a two-way radio and stereo face plate. No apparent damage was done to the vehicle."
Another similar tractor was stolen the same day, and this time it was pulling a trailer. The thieves made off with a reefer loaded with herring pulled by a 2000 Freightliner. The owner estimated it was taken sometime between 10:15 p.m. on Sunday and 5:30 a.m. on Monday when it was discovered missing. It had been parked in a business's yard the 1000 block of Great Street.
"The trailer contained 53,000 pounds of herring," said Champagne. "Both the semi truck and trailer, including the herring, were recovered in the area of Old Cariboo Highway and Marston Road, undamaged with the refrigerator still running."
Semi truck owners are requested to ensure that their machines and/or trailers are secured and
disabled. "Thieves scout targets and come prepared with the proper tools," said Champagne.
