After a gunfight on Diefenbaker Avenue Tuesday morning, police have now executed a second search warrant and seized new exhibits.

The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. on the residential street, while children and law abiding residents milled about enjoying the sun. At least one stray bullet struck a passing pickup, narrowly missing its driver.

The gunfire was exchanged between two small groups police called "gang related." One group was in a house well known to investigators while the other group fled the scene in a small car.

Following the incident, the house on Diefenbaker was raided by police. They made two arrests and several items were seized for evidence. However, the ones in the car were still unaccounted for.

On Wednesday, police announced they had executed a second search warrant, this one on a home in the 1400 block of McCullagh Avenue about a block away from the shooting.

"That search resulted in the seizure of a loaded high-powered rifle," said RCMP spokeswoman Const. Lesley Smith. "Members also located a bullet proof vest in the trunk of a vehicle parked at the residence which belonged to a known gang member."

No arrests were announced but Smith said these new clues would be processed along with the many items gathered from the Diefenbaker site. One of the items seized in the moments following the shooting was a video surveillance system rigged up at the Diefenbaker house. It is possible that the video captured some or all of the shooting, said Smith, but that remained to be seen by police.

The two males arrested at the outset are aged 26 and 41. They remain in police custody and charges have been forwarded to Crown in relation to the careless use of a firearm, robbery and other related offenses.
