A 40-year-old Prince man is in custody following a short-lived attempt to make off with a three-ton cube van, RCMP said Friday.
Police made an arrest Friday morning within about 10 minutes of receiving a report at about 7:15 a.m. of the theft near the Civic Centre.
Called to the scene, Mounties spotted the van within a few minutes headling along Massey Drive near Westwood Drive but when the sirens and lights were activated, the driver did not pull over.
Instead, police said he drove through a parking lot and across Massey before trying to flee on foot, but was apprehended almost immediately.
Police said the man, whose name was not released, had made off with the van after pulling a knife on the driver, who responded by turning the vehicle over and was unhurt.
Police are recommending charges of armed robbery, dangerous driving, causing a pursuit and resisting arrest.
Anyone who may have seen the incident is asked to call the Prince George RCMP at (250)561-3300.
