BCNE incident
Prince George RCMP responded to an incident at the BCNE midway around 8:45 p.m on Friday night.

One suspect has been arrested, following a bear spray attack at the BCNE midway on Friday night.

Police were called the fair at 8:47 p.m.after a report of a person spraying bear spray, Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said. Officers arrived on the scene and detained the suspect.

"The indication is that one youth was targeted," Douglass said. "Obviously, because it was in crowded environment, many people may have been affected."

Prince George RCMP are asking anyone who was directly a victim of the incident to contact them, by calling the Prince George detachment at 250-561-3300.

The incident caused a panic at the fair, as people rushed to get away from the attack and parents grabbed their children to flee. However, by 9:30 p.m. the fairgrounds had returned to normal operations.

Katherine Wolkowski was in line for the Starship ride with a friend and her nine-year-old daughter Emily when the attack happened. Wolkowski said she saw a group of teenagers walk by, then a few minutes later people began screaming and running for the exit.

"We all just ran," she said. "As soon as we got pushed around (by people running) we got a big gulp of it. My daughter was screaming - she couldn't breathe."

The three of them got pushed along by the crowd running to get away, she said, but managed to escape the press of people and made their way to the far end of the parking lot.

Wolkowski said their eyes were burning and she had to wash their clothes and even her glasses to get the pepper spray smell out. As they drove away, she could hear children screaming and crying in the parking lot

"It was definitely a crazy event. It was so scary," she said. "(Emily's) eyes were just bloodshot."

Everyone in the family was doing better by Saturday morning, Wolkowski said, and they planned another trip to the fair to try and enjoy the rides they missed out on because of the pepper spray incident.
