Police get their man

Terrace and North District RCMP have successfully arrested a 30-year-old Terrace man following a man hunt and stand off that closed Highway 16 West between Terrace and Kitwanga on Monday.

Terrace and North District RCMP have successfully arrested a 30-year-old Terrace man following a man hunt and stand off that closed Highway 16 West between Terrace and Kitwanga on Monday.

Police said the man and his father fled their rural residence near the highway using a boat. The members observed the father dropping off his son on the opposite side of a river.

"The father then returned to the property and was arrested without incident. An RCMP police dog and Emergency Response Team members deployed near the drop-site conducted a search through the rugged terrain and dense bush, locating and arresting the younger man," said Cpl Dan Moskaluk.

"Our officers are to be commended in regards to their carrying out their duties in this incident from start to finish. It was at great risk to themselves that the search and extraction of the suspect in bush conditions was successfully concluded without injury to any. It is by far riskier for our members to deploy under such conditions as compared to urban police interventions," added Moskaluk.

Both the son and the 54-year-old father remain in custody as the investigation continues.

Investigators are now working within a preliminary 24-hour detention period to prepare a proposed charge submission for Crown Counsel.

Highway 16 was reopened Monday once police determined there was little risk to the public in relation to the highway.
