Councillors will discuss the City of Prince George's single largest budget item Wednesday night.

Police services cost the city $19.3 million in 2010 and is projected to increase to $20.6 million in 2011.

City public safety and civic facilities director Rob Whitwham will present the budget for police, fire services, bylaw enforcement, off-street parking, land and facility management to council.

Public safety and civic facilities comprise $40.8 million of the city's proposed $117.1 million general operating budget. Projected spending in the department is up $1.7 million from the 2010 budget and almost $2 million from the final 2010 expenditure.

The city's property tax levy is projected to rise by 4.2 per cent this year.

Of the $3 million increase, $1.7 million is due to an increase in general operating costs, snow removal and road maintenance.

The remaining $1.3 million is part of a proposed special levy to fund capital projects for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

The budget meetings will take place at City Hall starting at 4:30 p.m. and resuming, after a dinner break, at 7 p.m. Members of the public wanting to provide feedback on the budget process are welcome at 4:30 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.
