A Prince George firefighter has been suspended without pay pending an RCMP investigation into an alleged theft.

Few details are available about the case, but the city confirmed Monday in a statement that it is aware of the ongoing RCMP investigation and is conducting an internal review. A source at the city confirmed the employee is a firefighter.

"Upon learning of that investigation, the city took immediate steps to ensure that public trust was not compromised," the statement read. "While we are unable to comment on individual circumstances due to privacy laws, we can confirm that the city is conducting its own independent investigation.

"As part of that process, it has suspended one individual without pay, pending completion of its investigation. The city has and will continue to take steps to protect the public interest."

Fire chief John Lane was not available to comment on Monday.

No details were provided about what items may have been stolen or what prompted the investigation.

No one from the RCMP was able to comment on whether any arrests have been made or if any charges would be recommended.
