Enbridge's Northern Gateway is hosting a workshop in Prince George today as part of a tour to connect potential workers with opportunities in the trades.

The Pathways to Apprenticeship Tour will be at the Ramada hotel downtown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshop will feature presentations by employers, educators, union leaders and government agencies about the opportunities in trades.

"A shortage of skilled workers is a major threat to B.C.'s growing economy," Catherine Pennington, Northern Gateway Pipelines senior manager of community benefits and sustainability, said in a statement. "We are supporting Pathways to Apprenticeship as part of Northern Gateway's ongoing efforts to ensure people across the north have the skills and connections to seize the opportunities of tomorrow."

The workshop will include an open house from 10 a.m. to noon, presentations from noon to 1 p.m and a questions and answer period from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Metis Nation British Columbia, Christian Labour Association of Canada, UA Piping Industry College, College of New Caledonia, Industry Training Authority and Work BC Service Providers will be participating in the workshop.

Other workshops will be held in Burns Lake, Houston, Kitimat, Terrace and Prince Rupert this week.

"Creating social prosperity and providing opportunities for our aboriginal communities needs to involve everyone. The Pathways to Apprenticeship [Tour] is an example of how industry, communities and government can make a difference," Metis Nation of B.C. spokesperson Colleen Hodgson said in a statement.
