After two years of planning, the Pine Centre Mall just got a little more kid-friendly.

There's now a new indoor children's play area, Pine for Play, bringing the great outdoors inside with its camping theme.

"When designing the play area, it was really important to include the communities that support our businesses on a regular basis and to embrace the outdoor lifestyle that so many northerners live to enjoy," said mall general manager Sonya Hunt.

The play area floor is a map of Prince George, Vanderhoof, Quesnel and Mackenzie.

Located near the mall's north entrance, the soft play area for kids ages two to eight years old includes soft seating for parents and guardians and will feature story times hosted by the Prince George Public Library.

"In examining trends in the shopping centre industry, play areas appeared to be a predominant attraction - one which was not currently being offered in northern B.C.," said mall marketing director Sandra Raymont.

Installation of the play area was completed between April 30 and May 2. In its opening week, more than 500 children made use of the new attraction.

"The response from parents has been overwhelming. We have had so many compliments and comments thanking us for finally bringing this special place to Pine Centre," Hunt said.

Free to use, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 12 years of age or older while in the play area. All users must wear socks, which are available for $1 from a nearby dispenser but will be distributed for free (while supplies last) during the month of May.
