The pilot who died when his private aircraft crashed Saturday was Montague (Monty) Edward Exton, 77, from Williams Lake, the B.C. Coroners Service said.

Exton's plane, a Cessna 185 float plane, was reported missing after he failed to return from a routine flight and an aerial search located the aircraft crashed into a hillside about nine kilometres northwest of Williams Lake, 236 kilometres south of Prince George.

Exton was the plane's lone occupant, authorities said.

A fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter from Seach and Rescue in Comox were dispatched to conduct the search after Williams Lake RCMP received a report shortly before 10 p.m. that Exton was overdue.

Exton's plane had left Williams Lake around 1:40 p.m. and was due to return at 5 p.m.

The B.C. Coroners Service, with the assistance of the Transportation Safety Board and the RCMP, is continuing to investigate this death.
