Prince George's SPCA animal shelter will be offering a deal on cat adoptions later this month.

During the Pick your Purr-fect Price campaign from Aug. 23 to 25, adopters can choose an adult cat and name their own adoption fee.

And there will be plenty of felines to choose from.

"Prince George, unfortunately, does not have a cat bylaw that requires spaying or neutering or tattooing identification so we always have lots of adult cats," said Prince George SPCA assistant manager Sara Thompson.

The SPCA usually charges $95 for an adoption but they'll be available by donation over those three days.

A typical adult cat stays at the shelter for 56 days and cost the SPCA $784 over that time to host.

"It's a fair size cost for us," Thompson said. "That's why we're going with Pick your Purr-fect Price."

Adopters will be asked to complete an application form and go through an interview.

"Basically, what it does is it helps us to match the right cat for you," Thompson said. "If you want a cuddly cat, we're not going to suggest the older cat that just wants to hang out by themselves. You don't want a cat that's really fearful to go to a home with lots of kids."

The cats will also be covered by six weeks of pet insurance courtesy of Petsecure to ensure the health of the feline during the rehoming period.

- The annual Paws for a Cause walk and fundraiser is set for Sept. 9 at Cottonwood Island Park. Nearly $30,000 was raised for the local shelter last year and the goal is to reach that amount this time around. The event will feature a barbecue, entertainment and prizes.
