With a red line painted on the left sides of their cheeks, signs and drums, roughly 100 people gathered at the School District 57 school parking lot on Sunday (Sept. 23) to participate in the #StandTogether rally.
Organizer Cheyanne McNeil says the goal of the event was to raise awareness about murdered and missing Indigenous woman and girls.
The rally comes after the recent deaths of 18-year-old Jessica Patrick from Lake Babine First Nation and 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr from Kotzebue, Alaska.
The Khast’an Drummers performed at the start and during the march, which took place along a footpath following Highway 16, also known as the Highway of Tears.
Participants sang and chanted as they marched and waved signs, which read "missing and never forgotten," "justice for our stolen daughters," "no more silence" and "no more missing daughters."
