City of Prince George crews are on scene of the massive water main break earlier this afternoon.

The City of Prince George says the break occurred at Third Ave. and Winnipeg Street and there continue to be traffic disruptions.

In a release, the city says crews are in the process of closing valves to turn off the flow of water through a cast iron pipe, 30 cm in diameter, that was installed in 1956.

Water did flow downtown but crews are working to clear ice and snow from the catch basins to allow water to flow through the stormwater system.

Once water is turned off, water service will be temporarily disrupted to homes as well as business in the area.
