Teachers scored a major victory in the near-decade-long fight over class size and composition when a B.C.

Teachers scored a major victory in the near-decade-long fight over class size and composition when a B.C. Supreme Court justice ruled this week that provincial legislation prohibiting them from bringing the item up at the bargaining table is a violation of their constitutional rights.

"I think it's a tremendous win for teachers, students, parents and the public education system in general," said Prince George and District Teachers Association Matt Pearce on Thursday, a day after Judge Susan Griffin ruled the 2002 legislation violated teachers' collective bargaining rights.

"The bills that have been struck down by the court have seriously damaged education locally and provincially for a decade and it's taken us this long to get a successful Charter challenge and it's a great day," Pearce said.
