Prince George Transit celebrated 50 years of continuous transit service on Wednesday.

To mark the occasion, two heated bus shelters were donated to the city.

"These are the first two fully enclosed heated shelters in all of northern B.C." said Michael Colborne, president and CEO of Pacific Western Transportation Canada.

The fully enclosed shelters will be heated and lit on a timer and will be located on Fifth Avenue.

"We wanted to donate something in recognition of 50 years of continuous service in Prince George, a lasting image and something useful to the citizens, said Trevor Webb, vice-president of transit system with PWTransit. "And hopefully this will drive and encourage use of the transit system in Prince George."

"We are so appreciative of this donation," said city manager Kathleen Soltis. "This is a wonderful gift to be able to provide shelters for our riders that are heated, to provide comfort for our riders. In over 50 years, ridership has grown immensely and we hope it will continue to grow."
