A Prince George student has won the local university's largest donor-funded entrance scholarship.

The University of Northern B.C. handed Lisa Russell the Helen Thurwell Scholarship, worth $25,000.

The recent College Heights Secondary grad is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology this fall. If she keeps her grades up, Russell is guaranteed $6,250 each year over four years.

Her goal is to enrol in the Northern Medical Program and become a physician, the UNBC release said.

Russell volunteered at the University Hospital of Northern B.C., on her grad committee and was a peer mentor during high school. She is also a highly-decorated judoka with the Prince George Judo Club, UNBC said.

The award, donated by Vernon and Jacqueline Forster, is given to a full-time female student from northern B.C. "with demonstrated community involvement and proven academic excellence."
