After setting a new local fundraising record, organizers of last year's Prince George Relay for Life were honoured with a Canadian Cancer Society national award of excellence for leadership.

The Prince George event brought in $548,000 in donations in 2013, the second highest total in Canada.

"Achieving this amazing award would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of so many volunteers, participants and outstanding support this community provides year after year," 2013 Relay For Life leadership chairman Trevor Patenaude said in a news release. "This committee put such heart and such passion into every meeting, every conversation, every idea and every decision."

Along with Patenaude the award also recognized the leadership shown by Tyler Neilson, Davy Greenlees, Jill Greenlees, Les Waldie and Jayne Stevens.

"We supported each other and worked together with the goal of helping produce the most successful Relay For Life Prince George had ever seen," Patenaude said. "I thank all of you for helping make 2013 a record-setting year, now let's finish what we started and take that No. 1 spot in 2014."

Canadian Cancer Society team lead for community giving Helen Owen nominated the Prince George group for the award. It was the first time a team from the B.C. and Yukon region were so honoured.

"It takes a small army of volunteers to host a successful Relay For Life," Owen said in a news release. "This leadership team provided inspiration and guidance to virtually hundreds of Prince George volunteers, which resulted in a best-ever event."

Registration is open for the 2014 Relay for Life, which will be held May 10-11 at Masich Place Stadium. The deadline to sign up is April 25.

Anyone who wants to volunteer for the 2014 event can get more information by calling Owen at 250-645-2364.
