The pilot killed in an Alberta helicopter crash has been identified as a Prince George resident.

Matthew Goodine, 28, was confirmed as the pilot who succumbed to his injuries after a Bell 260 helicopter went down on Grotto Mountain near Canmore.

Goodine was piloting a 20-minute sight-seeing flight that included an hour of snowshoeing in the South Ghost Area of the Rocky Mountains.

Canmore RCMP were notified of the crash around 1 p.m. Friday. The five people on board were transported to a Calgary hospital, but Goodine passed away en route.

The remaining four passengers, tourists from the U.K., were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from hospital.

The helicopter was operated by Kananaskis Mountain Helicopters.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

"The company is fully co-operating with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada who will commence an investigation," said Kananaskis Mountain Helicopters president Ralph Sliger in a written statement.

"It is a very sad day for all the staff at Kananaskis Mountain Helicopters, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our pilot," Sliger said.

Goodine's family declined to comment.

The company suspended their flight operations for the weekend and brought in grief counsellors to assist their other staff.

The company, which has been in operation since 1994, uses a fleet of 11 turbine helicopters for their heli-tours.
