Prince George can reel in the title of 2011 Ultimate Fishing Town if local supporters lobby for B.C.'s northern capital online.
The World Fishing Network (WFN), a 24-hour fishing lifestyle network, is hosting a Canada-wide contest to name the nation's top fishing hole. It is similar to the CBC's annual Hockeyville campaign.
Residents can support the nomination and hook a win by adding photos, videos and essays about Prince George at www.wfnfishingtown.com. Top prize is $25,000 for fishing-related causes plus other perks like a half-hour feature on WFN.
"Passionate anglers from around the country - from small rural towns to large cities - have proudly come forward to nominate their community as the best place to wet a line," said Mark Rubinstein, President and CEO of WFN. "We want people to get behind their towns, communities and cities and prove that they deserve the title of ultimate fishing town."
Following the nomination period ending April 8, the first round of public voting will be open from April 12 to May 3. A shortlist from each Canadian region, 18 finalists altogether, will emerge from the public voting process. Those finalists will vie for top spot with a second round of online voting between May 10 and 31.
"The results will be announced in June at a ceremony in the winning community emceed by Mariko Izumi, Canada's fishing sweetheart and host of WFN's Hookin' Up with Mariko Izumi," said Rubinstein.
Last year's winner was Port Alberni, emerging from a field of 160 nominated communities and more than 850,000 votes.
