Nearly $38 million worth of improvements to Highway 16 West have been added to the job jar.

Representatives of the federal and provincial governments announced the commitment Tuesday in Terrace.

The work includes the construction of five additional passing lanes along Highway 16, as well as an upgrade to the junction of Highway 16 and 37 in Terrace, where there is currently a four-way stop.

The new passing lanes will be constructed at: Cluculz Lake Hill, about 40 km west of Prince George; Broman Lake near Burns Lake; Tyhee Lake, east of Telkwa between Houston and Smithers; Toboggan Lake near Smithers; Rainbow Hill, 30 km east of Prince Rupert.

In all, $37.7 million has been earmarked with the provincial government contributing $21.6 million and the federal government providing $16.1 million.

A timeline on when the projects will be pursued was not provided.

"By supporting improvements to Highway 16, we are helping local businesses move their goods to market and fostering long-term prosperity in the region for years to come," federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi said in a statement.
