Passersby intervene to stop suspect

The police were quick, but two civilians were even quicker, serving a shoplifter up to authorities like a cold drink on a warm day.

It was a pleasant evening on Monday at about 8 p.m. when a suspect allegedly tried to rip off a bottle of booze from the BX Cold Beer and Wine Store.

Police explained that the lone male, later identified as Adam Martin Petavel, apparently grabbed a bottle from the shelf and tried to flee the building. He was slowed down by the security doors installed at that location but "he broke through the door and attempted to flee on a bike," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass.

His flight was slowed again, this time by concerned people.

"A passerby attempted to stop the suspect and a struggle ensued," said Douglass. "The suspect allegedly assaulted the good Samaritan causing lacerations to his head. An employee of the BX Pub joined the fight and assisted in subduing the male. As a result of the fight, both the suspect and good Samaritan were transported to hospital with relatively minor injuries."

The suspect was physically detained by the two citizens and police completed the arrest when they arrived moments later.

Petavel, 35, now stands accused of the incident, charged with robbery, assault causing bodily harm and mischief.
