A planned closure of a section of University Way has been delayed, the City of Prince George announced on social media on Wednesday.

"The Shane Creek Bridge project is delayed. We'll provide updated information about the University Way closure once the new dates are confirmed," the city's Facebook post said.

On July 12, the city announced that a section of University Way would be closed between Aug. 8 and Sept. 1 for a project to resurface the deck of Shane Creek Bridge.

University Way was expected to be closed between Foothills Boulevard and the entrance to UNBC.

The project, which has a budget of $1.2 million, is funded by the General Infrastructure Reinvestment Fund, and will see the old bridge deck being replaced.

The deck resurfacing is needed as the existing deck has reached the end of its useful life.

The concrete bridge panels have been designed and constructed to be easily removed from the substructure to limit impacts to the motoring public, and to reduce lengthy construction times often experienced with this type of remedial work.

During construction, the university entrance will still be accessible via Tyner Boulevard but the walking trail that runs under the bridge may be intermittently closed.

"BC Transit and the City of Prince George are informing customers that the previously planned detours beginning August 8 due to the Shane Creek Bridge replacement project have been put on hold," a BC Transit spokesperson said in an email. "The routes 15, 16 and 19 will continue to run on a their regular routes and schedules until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and more information will be available in the near future."
