Signs remained up Wednesday saying Cottonwood Island Park is still closed due to high water and flooding.

Cottonwood Island Park will remained closed to the public for the next few days if not through the weekend, city parks supervisor Chris Bjorn said Wednesday.

The park was briefly reopened last week but then closed again over the weekend when the water level rose once more. Bjorn said the water has declined since then but the situation remains uncertain.

"It really depends," Bjorn said. "It can really go up and down with rain and with snow melt but it's getting better."

The park was closed for safety reasons. No damage has been detected so far, "but you might not see it until the water level drops."

A consultant has been hired to look at ways to mitigate the effects of high water and ice jams on the Nechako side of the island. Bjorn said a new bridge tying the island's north end to the mainland will be constructed this fall, replacing one that was taken out in this winter's ice jam.
