Pandemic death toll continues to rise in northern B.C.

Two COVID-related deaths were reported in the Northern Health region on Wednesday, bringing the number of deaths linked to the pandemic in the region this week up to six.

The deaths, reported by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday, bring northern B.C.’s total death toll from the pandemic up to 297.

As of Wednesday, 47 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Northern Health region, the B.C. CDC reported. That includes 14 people in critical care. Those numbers are down from Tuesday, when 52 people were hospitalized with COVID in the north, 15 in critical care.

The B.C. CDC reported 108 new COVID-19 cases in the Northern Health region on Wednesday afternoon, hours before many provincial public health orders are lifted at midnight. Earlier this month, the B.C. CDC stopped reporting the number of active COVID-19 cases.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 27,492 cases of COVID-19 in the north.

During the week of Feb. 6 to Feb. 12, there were 430 new COVID-19 cases reported in the Prince George local health area, the B.C. CDC reported.

Across B.C., nearly 11.18 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 514,471 in the Northern Health region.

As of Feb. 14, 86 per cent of eligible people (aged five and older) in the Prince George local health area had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 79 per cent had received two doses.

Prince George's vaccination rate was below the provincial average. As of Tuesday, the B.C. Ministry of Health reported that 90.4 per cent of eligible British Columbians (aged five and older) had recived at least one dose and 85.4 per cent had received their second dose.
