For the fourth successive year, the Prince George RCMP's Girls' Run for Fun program will be lacing up its shoes and taking to the pavement.
Open to girls 10 to 15 years old and at no cost, the seven-week program culminates in a five-kilometre run at Fort George Park on June 21.
It's about more than working up a sweat. Each of the 14 sessions leading up to the big day will begin with a guest speaker who will talk about such issues as drug and alcohol awareness, social media safety, anti-bullying, nutrition and self esteem.
The girls will then break into training groups, based on ability, and work towards a goal of completing the final five kilometre challenge race.
"This is a fun program designed to increase self-esteem and empower young ladies to reach healthy fitness goals," said community policing coordinator Linda Parker.
It starts May 6 and continues every Tuesday and Thursday until the big day. About 50 girls have participated each year in past editions.
To register a girl for this program, e-mail Linda Parker at [email protected] or Krista Levar at [email protected] and request an application.
As an alternative, register in person at the Prince George RCMP community policing office located at the 575 Brunswick St. detachment until April 24 or at the new detachment beginning April 28.
