Prince George's holiday safe-ride program recorded a strong first weekend, delivering 156 rides on Friday and Saturday nights.
Operation Red Nose volunteers gave 57 rides on Friday and 99 on Saturday. The total on Saturday was four more rides than the service delivered on the same night in 2016. In 2014, Red Nose gave 148 rides on the same Saturday night, the highest total in the organization's 20-year history.
A total of 76 and 77 volunteers came out on Friday and Saturday. These volunteers travelled a combined total of 3,908 km.
"We are happy with how the weekend unfolded and a steady stream of calls requesting rides began right after 9 p.m. when our phone lines were opened on both nights," said Andrea Johnson, Operation Prince George spokesperson. "It was definitely busier Saturday and we had more than enough teams to meet the demand for rides."
Operation Red Nose will be returning this Friday and Saturday. Organizers sayvolunteers are still needed for New Year's Eve. Applications are available online at ornpg.ca .
