An open house will be held Thursday to discuss the proposed transit operations and maintenance facility.

The proposed site for the facility, located at the corner of Foothills Boulevard and 18th Avenue, has generated some opposition among residents for various reasons, including issues of safety for area trails and sports fields.

"This has certainly caused interest and that's why we are holding this information session. We want to have an informed and engaged public, said city spokesperson Mike Kellett.

"B.C. Transit and the City's Planning and Development Services Department will make a presentation followed by a question and answer period," Kellett said.

The project, a $23 million commitment with Prince George, is part of the $160 million in federal and provincial funding for B.C.Transit projects.

The proposed building will support clean-burning compressed natural gas buses as well as improving operational efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, according to BC Transit.

This also includes the addition of modern city buses with improved technology aimed at providing more efficient service, delivery and safety to support about 1.9 million rides given each year.

The information night will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Kin Centre.

"The public is invited to bring their questions to the open house and they can also submit their written comments to the city for the public hearing in front of council, in the spring," Kellett said.

"The public hearing will give people the opportunity to bring their representations forward regarding the use of this land."
