Prince George RCMP blocked off a section of Pine Street for public safety on Thursday morning to deal with a 'suspicious object'.

A statement issued by the police at 10 a.m. said police were investigating an ongoing incident in the 2500 block of Pine Street, between Diefenbaker Avenue and Monkley Avenue, and asked the public to stay away for their safety.

Prince George RCMP Cst. Jennifer Cooper now confirms that at 8:20 a.m. officers responded to an incident at the residence and upon arrival discovered a suspicious object.

“Police have since requested the assistance of the BCRCMP Explosives Disposal Unit to deal with the object. The Prince George RCMP utilizes the BCRCMP Explosives Disposal Unit for several incidents of this type each year,” states Cooper.

Police say in the interest of maintaining public safety, members have removed nearby residents from their homes and have restricted access to the location. There is currently no risk to the public outside of the immediate area that police have secured.

"At this time, we encourage those that have been displaced by this event and require support or assistance finding accommodation to contact RCMP Victim Services by calling 250-561-3329," states Cooper.

Police say the incident is ongoing and will provide updates as they become available.
